And when you’re a first-generation University student, it feels like living on hard-mode without anyone to guide you. So you made the smart decision and chose job security and financial stability over your dream. But years later you keep coming back to those same thoughts, “What if…”, “I should have…”. Medical school was never an option for me…or so I thought. I spent years accepting it was out of reach and it wasn’t until I left survival mode that I gained the support and confidence to recognize that I did have what it takes. But that realization was only the beginning.

As a non-traditional mature applicant myself, I understand the hopeless feeling of working 40-50 hours per week, commuting, attending family and social commitments while somehow finding time to work through the arduous and overwhelming OMSAS application, learning the admission processes, the trending social health issues, bioethics, interview strategies, and developing all of the other skills that go into standing out amongst the other strong candidates. Having recently interviewed with NOSM 2 years in a row and now a medical student in their program, I am in a strong position to recommend realistic strategies for mature and non-traditional applicants.
